Weber's Jr. Livestock Ambassadors met last night and have lots of great plans to support the Jr. Livestock Program this coming year. We look foward to great activities!

Congratulations to our 2011-12 Jr. Livestock Ambassadors: Cheyenne Shellabarger, Savanna Steed, Karlee Baugh, Jessie Shaw, Cassie Breeding, Holden Steed, Kylee Breeding, Marijka Dame, Kylie Felter, and Hannah Ipsen. They will be supported by Melisa Griffith, Jr. Livestock Ambassador Advisor.

In this leadership role, they will help promote the junior livestock program at events such as school programs, festivals, etc. They will also help with annual events such as the exhibitor's meeting, annual Jr. Livestock Meeting, and the county fair.

Each Jr. Livestock Ambassador also plans and completes an individual project. We look forward to their projects and appreciate their efforts to help the Weber County Jr. Livestock program grow.

Saddle String will perform at the
3rd Annual 4-H BBQ & Concert
on Saturday, August 27, 2012.

Preparations have begun for the 3rd Annual 4-H BBQ Supper & Concert to be held on Saturday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Sandridge Park in Roy. This event funds scholarships for our outstanding graduating seniors. This year’s scholarship recipients are Anisha Ipsen and Shad Hansen.

The Utah Commitment to Agriculture Foundation has offered the following opportunity for youth qualifying to sell market animals at the Weber County Fair Jr. Livestock auction.

If you buy one ticket for your buyer before the auction, CTA will purchase the 2nd ticket for your buyer. We thing this is a great win-win. You thank your buyer with a nice gift that you can easily present right during the auction (the ticket only costs you $10, however your buyer receives two tickets to enjoy a nice evening out – a $20 value), and we increase awareness of this important fundraising event at the same time.

To be eligible for this deal, youth must qualify for the auction and must purchase their ticket from the office prior to August 13.

Weber Teens Selected as State 4-H Ambassadors

Congratulations to Weber County's Cassie Breeding and Morgan Rich for being among the eight Utah teens selected as State 4-H Ambassadors. Both of these young ladies did outstanding projects.

Cassie developed 150 horse study cards to help 4-H'ers excel on their tests and taught four 4-H Horse Discovery workshops. She did a great job of preparing and teaching fun and age-appropriate workshops.
Morgan organized and led the "For the Love of Andy" 4-H Club. The members of this club trained a colt which had been donated to Weber County 4-H by Andy Fishburne. The colt will be sold this spring and the proceeds will support the Weber County 4-H Horse program.

Pretty amazing projects completed by two pretty amazing 4-H'ers! We know Cassie and Morgan will do an excellent job of representing 4-H across Utah.

2011 Weber County Livestock Tagging Dates

All Jr. Livestock animals must be tagged to exhibit in the Weber County Fair. The tag serves as a proof of ownership for the minimum days required for your species. Ownership requirements for the Weber County Fair are:

Steers and Bucket Calves ‐ 90 days prior
Sheep and Swine ‐ 60 days prior.

Youth must bring their animal to be tagged on one of the following dates:

Livestock Nutrition Workshops

Youth, parents and leaders are all invited to attend the annual Livestock Show Feed Workshop, at the Ogden IFA on March 22. 2011. FREE. The workshop will be taught by Dr. Burgoon.

Separate workshops will be held for the following species:

Swine – 6 p.m.
Sheep – 7 p.m.
Beef – 8 p.m.

New! 4-H Bucket Calf Show

We are pleased to announce that there will be a 4-H Bucket Calf Show on Wednesday, August 10 at this year’s fair.

This is a showmanship contest. Judging will focus on the exhibitor’s knowledge of their project animal, ability to show and fit as well as the overall care given to the calf.

Here’s a brief overview of participation guidelines:

Exhibitors must be enrolled in 4-H, be a resident of Weber County, raise the animal in Weber County, care for the animal being shown, and be at least 8 years old and in 3rd-5th grade (as of January 1).
Calves must be born between February 1, 2011 and March 31, 2011. Only steers can be exhibited; both dairy and beef breeds are acceptable.
Calves must be owned and tagged for a period of 90 days prior to fair weigh in time. Tagging will occur during the Weber County Jr. Livestock beef tagging.
Exhibitor may only enter and show one calf; each exhibitor may tag two calves.
Calves will be shown and judged under beef fitting and showmanship guidelines. Each exhibitor must be working with the project animals and be in attendance with the animal during the entire fitting process.
The class will be placed and awards presented through 6th place.
Animals do not sell during the auction.
Fair Weigh In Time: Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.
Show Time: Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 4 p.m.

This is going to be a GREAT way for younger 4-H’ers to get involved in the cattle project. For those who choose to show a beef breed in the 4-H Bucket Calf Show, it would be possible for them to raise the calf through the following year and exhibit their animal at the steer show.

Annual Jr. Livestock Meeting

The annual Jr. Livestock meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. in the Auction Arena at the Weber County fairgrounds. During the meeting we will discuss upcoming changes, highlight program successes, share new resources, introduce our new Jr. Livestock Ambassadors, and distribute checks at the conclusion of the meeting to those youth who have met the 4-H portfolio/FFA record book requirement (assuming at least 75% of the auction proceeds have been collected).

4-H community service opportunities

You get your 4-H portfolio back and it says, “You need to get involved in more 4-H community service.” Well, here is your chance. Consider volunteering for one of these roles to help the Jr. Livestock program. If interested in learning more about any of these roles or signing up, call the 4-H office at 399-8202.

Sheep Pens: On Saturday morning, prior to the fair, adult and youth volunteers are needed to set up the sheep pens.
Jr. Livestock Photo Station: Each year we provide our youth with an attractive backdrop for them to take pictures of their project animals. Your club could volunteer to set up the backdrop, make sure it stays looking nice throughout the fair, and then take in down at the conclusion of the fair. Backdrop panels and a banner provided; club would provide all other decorative items.
Livestock Arena: We want our show ring to look nice for all of the livestock shows. Your club could volunteer to decorate the arena and make sure it stays looking nice for the shows, then removing the items after the last show (beef).
Washing Panels: Our show ring panels get really dirty after being stored all year long. You and/or your club could volunteer to wash the panels on the day of weigh-in.
Wiping Down Bleachers: Every day during the fair, we want our exhibitors to have a nice place to watch the show. Volunteers are needed early each morning to pick up trash in the bleacher area and wipe down the bleachers.

Find a buyer workshop

Each Weber County Fair Jr. Livestock exhibitor is responsible for ensuring they have a buyer for their animal. Come learn ideas on how to identify potential buyers, ways to present yourself and market your project to a potential buyer, and follow-up ideas to maintain a positive relationship with your buyer.

Weber Jr. Livestock members who want to show a sheep or swine in the Weber County Fair will need to have their animal tagged at one of the following dates:

Saturday, June 5: 8 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Wednesday, June 9: 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Both tagging events will be held at the Weber County Fairgrounds in the show arena (NOT the auction arena).

2010 State Portfolio Judging Results Announced

Congratulations to Lacey Papageorge and Samantha Bricco. Their portfolios were selected as top in Utah, earning them the opportunity to participate in National 4-H Congress interviews this summer. Of the nine portfolios selected across the state of Utah, two were from Weber County. That says a lot about the quality of our portfolio program. Thank you members, parents and leaders for all your hard work in the 4-H portfolio program.

4-H Swine and Beef Fitting & Showing Clinics

Holden Steed, an eight-year 4-H show veteran, will be teaching two fitting and showing clinics on Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in Marriott-Slaterville. Members, parents and leaders are invited to attend either the swine or the beef workshop or attend both clinics. The clinics are free; pre-registration is required by calling (801) 399-8202 by March 12. The schedule will be:

Swine: 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Beef: 12 p.m - 2:30 p.m.

In the clinic, Holden will explain how to feed, exercise, train, groom, and show your pig or steer in a market or showmanship class. Demonstration animals will be provided. Do not bring animals to the workshop.

4-H Sheep Workshop

Lacey Papageorge, a six‐year 4-H lamb show veteran, will be teaching a sheep clinic that will help you select a quality lamb and feed it appropriately. This clinic is part of her State Ambassador project. Later in June, Lacey will conduct a follow‐up clinic that will focus on fitting and showmanship. The February workshop
will cover:
• How to select a show quality lamb
• What supplies you will need to raise your lamb
• Some showmanship tips and hints
• How to correctly feed and what to feed your lamb

The clinic will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 6:00 p.m., 4‐H office, FREE, registration deadline is February 16. Members, parents and leaders are all invited to attend!

2010 Utah Jr. Livestock Shows

Besides showing in the Weber County Fair, many youth exhibit at one of the many state-sponsored Jr. Livestock Shows. The rules and entry forms are posted a www.webercounty4-H.org.

To be eligible to show at any of the state Jr. Livestock shows, or to show at the Utah State Fair, your animal must be tagged with a state tag, which is different from the Weber County tag. Exhibitors desiring to show at the Spanish Form, Delta, Ferron, or Vernal shows will need to make arrangements with the supervisor to have their animal tagged prior to county tagging because the tagging deadlines for these shows are earlier than ours. Animals must be tagged 100 days prior to the show for beef; 60 days prior to the show for sheep and swine. NOTE: Exhibitors must give supervisors adequate notice to make tagging arrangements.

Getting Ready for County Fair

By now youth have tagged their animals and are busy feeding, grooming and training their animals. Here are some reminders as you prepare for the show.

Each exhibitor is responsible for ensuring he or she has a buyer for their animal. The auction will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 2 p.m. Once youth have a buyer, call the Weber County Fair Office at (801) 399-8711 and provide fair staff with the name and mailing address of your buyer. The fair office will mail an invitation to attend the Buyer's Social to your buyer.
Monitor your animal’s weight to make sure it meets the minimum weight requirements: 100 pounds – lambs; 220 – hogs; 1,000 – steers.
If your animal’s tag comes out, it is your responsibility to IMMEDIATELY notify your supervisor. The supervisor will make arrangements to re-tag your animal.
The 2009 rules for the Junior Livestock show were distributed during tagging. Remember, the county will not be printing a Premium Book this year. If you need additional copies of the rules, they are available at www.webercounty4-h.org/htm/weber-county-fair.
The following resources are available to help you with your project:
a. Clippers can be checked out from the 4-H office (you must provide your own blades)
b. The county owns portable scales for hogs and lambs, which you are welcome to borrow. Arrangements can be made with Craig and Kathy Johnson, the hog supervisors, for to you pick up and return the scales.
c. 1st Time Exhibitor brochure – Available at www.webercounty4-h.org/htm/featured-programs/junior-livestock/livestock-resources
d. Livestock manuals are available for purchase.
e. Showmanship videos for sheep, swine and beef are available for check out.
Get to work on a great club display. Your display should identify the name of your 4-H club, recognize last year’s buyers and boosters, and show your great 4-H spirit.
Get involved in community service.
a. One great way to get involved is to sign up to help set up lamb pens for the fair. 15 adults and youth are needed on August 2 at 8 a.m. It will take approximately 2 hours. Call the 4-H office at (801) 399-8202 to sign up. Bring gloves.
b. Volunteer to help sort meat donated through the Donated Meat Program to the Utah Food Bank. This typically occurs the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in September.
There are a limited number of RV/sleeping trailer spaces at the fairgrounds for supervisors and exhibitors with special needs. Contact Donna at (801) 399-8209 to discuss needs. Except for these limited exceptions, exhibitors who want to bring RV’s/sleeping trailers to the fair can park in the BDO parking lot area (immediately West of the fairgrounds).
